In Southern California, car accidents are so common that we hardly pay attention anymore. My auto accident law firm is inundated with accident reports on a daily basis, because when you live in Los Angeles County, it just goes with the territory. But every once in a while, I read about an accident that astonishes even me. This recent multi-car crash on the i-10 in Pomona almost sounds like something out of a Hollywood film.

10 Vehicles Involved in Pomona Car Crash

If you haven't heard the story, various reports have cited an accident that involved 10 vehicles, including a tractor trailer. It appears that the crash began with 3 cars, and then several other vehicles collided with the wreckage in a sort of domino effect. Unfortunately, this is usually how it goes with multi-car pileups. It starts with two or three vehicles, and then several others inevitably get swept up in the chaos of the situation.

In this case, one of the vehicles was a big rig carrying several tons of diesel. Witnesses say that they heard explosions in the midst of the collisions. According to the ABC report, 9 people were injured, and 1 was killed. At least 2 of the injured victims were air-lifted to local hospitals. The freeway was shut down for hours. It's a truly heartbreaking story.

"Cars were being hit left and right, and then we saw a truck coming at us. My kids were in the back of the car. The truck hit us and it hit another van. We saw the truck catch on fire. My wife just goes, 'Well get out of here, just keep driving and pull over,'" one driver told ABC News.

How to Stay Safe

So the question now is: How can we avoid getting caught up in similar circumstances? To be honest, there are no guarantees, but it's important to keep a safe distance from the vehicles you're following on the highway, and always maintain an awareness of your surroundings. Avoid any distractions like cell phones, and always follow the speed limit. It doesn't matter how fast the other cars are going. The faster you drive, the worse your prognosis in the event of an unexpected accident.

If you have already been involved in a multi-car pileup, call a qualified car accident lawyer at once. You may be entitled to compensation, but it's important that you act quickly. In order to gather the proper evidence, your attorney will need to take swift action. Don't become another casualty.
